Previous post info

This picture shows some of the collateral advertising done for the 2009 Cattle Barons Ball of Dallas.
Several of my watercolors were used on the promotional materials for that year's ball and for two years, I donated paintings for the auction which annually raises more money for Cancer Research than any other single one night venue. I was proud to have my work featured for such a worthy cause.
The two Giclee prints which I am offering in the previous post were used for this promotion.

The Sentinal

Watercolor - 9"x12" on Arches cold press paper.

Early morning, last September, I was walking the old cemetery East of the town of Lincoln, NM, (home of the Lincoln County Wars and William H. Bonney, AKA-Billy the Kid.) Most of the graves here were unmarked. This old concrete marker was un-named but looked as if someone had recently placed silk flowers at the base. Notice the nail in the cross and the interesting shadow.

A larger version of a little study that I did earlier. This is on the main street of old Lincoln, NM, home of the Lincoln County Wars and William H Bonney, AKA, Billy the Kid.

Black Eyed Susans

Dad and I were fishing the banks of Hudson Lake in Northeastern Oklahoma. As we worked our way down the path, we had to climb over these old downed tree limbs. I snapped a pic with my iPhone and did the following painting after returning to my studio.

Goats Gruff

While driving the back roads of Osage County, Oklahoma....I spotted these friendly little critters grazing in a pasture. My 'good' camera was in the trunk of the car...so, I snapped some iPhone pics and did this
8"x10" watercolor after returning to my studio. I was intrigued by the color and contrast of their coats...and their curiosity.

The Loner - progs

Steps in the process.

What! This is not a watercolor!

I went off the reservation this time and did a quick little oil painting just for fun.

Title: The Loner

De un hombre pobre rancho.

Watercolor on Arches 140lb paper. 10"x14".

As I travel the Southwest, I am continually drawn to these simpler structures and lifestyles of their owners. I say that I like to paint places where I would be comfortable living. Gimme a stack of firewood, maybe a dog. A paid-for pickup truck...and I would be in heaven.

Art notes: I was working with a very limited palette, here. 3 colors: Burnt Sienna, Olive Green and Van Dyke Brown. Just because.

"GEE and HAW"

Watercolor - 6" x 8" on Arches Paper
There comes a time in the birth of a painting that I call the point of no return. It is either going to "make it" or flop. I was almost there on this one and was about to chunk it to the art gods. So I put it aside and when coming back to it...a new-found enthusiasm polished it off with a touch of whimsy and vehement brush-work.
Gee and Haw are commands taught to driving-horses or mules.
Gee means turn right and Haw, the left.

The Gift

"High Country" by artist, Wm Bill Lewis.

I recently attended a memorial reception in Little Rock, for my late friend, Bill Lewis.
While remembering Bill with other artists, I commented that he had sent me an original painting as a get-well card when I was laid up several years ago in Parkland Hospital, Dallas.
Soon as I returned home I started tearing this place apart looking for the painting. Success! It was stuck inside a book of poems by Louis L'Amour, right where I put it. I recently moved and had placed it there for safe keeping. I wanted to share this little jewel with you. Thanks, Bill. Rest in peace.

Apple Barn at Picacho

Watercolor on 140 lb Arches Block. 10"x14"
I just completed this piece. Should have paid a bit more attention to my composition but pretty happy with some of the redeeming factors. A cropping may be in order.

Shadows on a Wall- San Patricio, NM

Another 3" x 5" watercolor study on Moleskine book paper.

I was working on this painting when I got the word that my friend, Bill Lewis had passed.

He lost the battle with Prostate cancer in St. Vincent, Little Rock, AR. So, this one is for Bill.

Full Moon Bridge

Watercolor on 140lb Arches - 8"x10"
In 2010, I spent several days painting on location at Garvan Woodland Gardens, Hot Springs, AR.
I recently did this watercolor from a photo and sketch which I did at that time.

Winter Calf (detail)

Many of my artist and collector friends like to see cropped versions of paintings, so here is a close-up of the previous watercolor - "Winter Calf."
